Founded as the Terramar Palace in 1932, this hotel was one of the first Grand Hotels on the Spanish coast. During the Spanish Civil War it was used as a hospital for two years; in 1960 it was purchased by Francisco Marcé. Over the years that followed, he extended the former hotel with its 60 rooms into a large four-star establishment with 209 rooms. Terramar is an early example of the terraced architecture that is so typical of Spain. The eight-storey building with its attic floor can actually be regarded as a mix of styles. Building regulations meant that the new building during the early 1960s actually had to be built on top of the old hotel. Some of the seven conference rooms and all the hotel rooms still survive from 1932, when the place was first built. Although it looks compact from the outside, the hotel is a totally different place once you step inside. The finest room is located to the left of the entrance hall. A large and lengthy recreation room provides a view of the hotel beach and the sea. The room is like an architectural version of a typical stretch of Mediterranean beach: the endlessly long bar represents the beach cafés, the passageway in front of it is the beach promenade; the pillars imitate the sunshades, the furniture the rented sunbeds and little tables, and the ceiling the surf. The hotel grounds, which cover an area of 20,000 square metres, contain a kidney-shaped swimming pool, two tennis courts and a small park with a fountain.
