The Kahala, Barcelona's first and oldest Polynesian bar, is far to the west of the Avda. Diagonal. It was built and run by Joaquin Carreres. It is still unclear whether the then famous racing driver Angel Nieto was also an owner or merely a guest at that time, or whether his name was only used to make the place even more popular. Then again, mysteries like those certainly add to the charm of a Polynesian bar. The facade was originally a lot more attractive, if old photographs are anything to go by, but the pompous entrance is as impressive as it ever was. A stylised temple wall leads to a foyer with a bridge across a genuine pond, leading the guest further inside. A long bar extending into the depths of the room dominates the establishment. Beyond the bar, baby sharks can be seen swimming in aquariums, and facing it are intimate niches with bamboo seats, decorated with wooden masks and fantastic figures.
