When the Kino Urgel was bought in 1960 by Don Pedro Balañá it was the fourth cinema in his then still small empire. After alteration work by Antoni Bonamusa, it was opened in 1963 with the classic Carmen Jones by Otto Preminger (USA, 1954). The Urgel is one of the world's monster movie houses: originally designed to have a capacity of 2,324, its present 1,832 seats still make it the largest cinema in Spain, if not in Europe. Film premiers are held here on a regular basis, and stars are invited from national and international film productions. The 200-square-metre screen and 34 loudspeakers ensure that even people right at the back still feel at the front of the action. The movie theatre itself is not the only gigantic room here - the entrance area, with its foyers on different levels and its own exit, is also absolutely immense. Another reason the Urgel is the most popular cinema in Barcelona is because the seats have armrests for every single visitor.
